How to Choose Between a Humidifier and a Dehumidifier
This may not be a choice you need to make. Many homes benefit from having both. If your house feels too humid in summer and too dry in winter, then we recommend you look into having both a whole-house dehumidifier and humidifier installed into the HVAC system. You can have complete control over achieving the ideal balanced humidity (we recommend 45% relative humidity).
You may only need one of these humidity control devices. If dry air isn’t an issue, but your home frequently has humidity during summer above 60%, then you’ll only need a dehumidifier, for example. Our team will help you if you’re on the fence about which installations you need—we’ll never try to sell you on a product that isn’t beneficial for your home.
The Benefits of Using a Humidifier for Health and Comfort
Dry air is a common problem in Colorado because our cold weather freezes much of the ambient moisture from the air. When air is too dry (less than 30% relative humidity), it creates several issues. Here’s how a humidifier helps:
- Better cold-weather comfort. It’s easier to stay warm when there’s greater humidity in the air that traps heat in your body.
- Fewer health concerns. Dry air causes cracked skin and eye and nose irritation. Dried mucus membranes also allow for easier disease transmission.
- Protection for furnishings and possessions. Low humidity can cause wood to warp and paint to peel.
Advantages of a Dehumidifier to Control Indoor Humidity Levels
You already know one of the main negative effects of high humidity: it makes heat feel much worse. This is because it’s harder for your body to expel heat through perspiration when there’s too much moisture in the air. Using a dehumidifier can benefit you in several ways:
- Cooler comfort. Balanced humidity can make it feel as if the temperature is 8–10°F cooler.
- Reduced HVAC use. When you feel cooler, you won’t have to run your AC as much and drive up your bills.
- Stops mold and mildew growth. Humid conditions encourage the growth of mold and mildew. Molds can contribute to poor indoor air quality in a home.
Maintenance Keeps Your Humidifier or Dehumidifier Running Smoothly
It’s important to regularly schedule maintenance for your humidifier and/or dehumidifier to ensure they keep working their best. Lack of maintenance can cause them to fail many years early. We offer HVAC maintenance that includes IAQ devices. Contact Affordable Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. today for more information and to schedule service.
