How Central Air Conditioners Work
You’re likely familiar with the layout of a central air conditioning system: an outdoor condenser unit that connects to an indoor evaporator coil and blower fan. This is known as a split system because of the divide between indoor and outdoor components.
The compressor located in the condenser places refrigerant under pressure, turning it into a hot gas. This causes the refrigerant to circulate between two sets of coils where it absorbs heat (indoor coils) and exhausts heat (outdoor coils), changing between liquid and gas form as it does so. This process is called heat exchange. By absorbing heat from your home and releasing it outside, the AC cools down the indoor air. The blower fan then pushes the cooled air into ducts that transport it throughout your house.
Advantages of Central Air Conditioning Systems
Central air conditioning systems have several benefits that make them the most common cooling system for homes:
- Whole-house cooling: Unlike window units, central ACs can cool off the whole house with a single installation.
- Fits most homes: If your house already has ductwork in place, a central AC installation is a straightforward job for our technicians.
- Affordable: Installing a mid-efficiency central AC is among the most affordable choices for home cooling.
Is Central Air Conditioning Right for Your Home?
If your home already has ductwork, then a central air conditioning system is one of the best choices available to you. It isn’t difficult for our experts to locate a central air conditioner with the right power levels to keep your home cool and perform efficiently. If you don’t have ducts, it is possible to add ductwork. However, you might be better off looking into a ductless mini split heat pump rather than a central AC.
Central Air Conditioning Troubleshooting
Our technicians are always ready to help when you need central air conditioning repairs. Before you call us to repair a broken AC, however, you can try some basic troubleshooting steps:
- Make sure the thermostat is correctly set.
- Check on the power to the AC. Is there a tripped circuit breaker?
- If the air filter for the air conditioner is dirty, this might be causing the problem. Put in a clean filter.
- Make sure the area around the outdoor condenser is clear for about a foot and that the cabinet is clean.
- Examine all room vents to see they aren’t blocked or closed.
Once you’ve exhausted the troubleshooting possibilities, reach out to us and we’ll be glad to help you get your home cool once again.
