What Is a Dual Fuel System and How Does It Work?

Heat pumps are excellent ways to heat and cool homes, but they do have a potential drawback. Because they must draw heat from outside a home to bring indoors, they can struggle with efficiency when the outside temperature goes below freezing. There are cold weather heat pumps to help deal with this. Another option is a dual fuel system.

With a dual fuel system, your heat pump has a back-up heating system: a gas or propane-powered furnace. When the heat pump starts to lose efficiency because of low outdoor temperatures, the back-up heat will automatically turn on to supplement the heat pump’s performance and maintain the temperature and energy efficiency you’re used to.

Should You Consider a Dual Fuel System for Your Home?

This is the big question, and it isn’t one we can answer for you here. It all depends on your home and the energy sources you use. Our technicians will perform a heat load calculation for your house to determine how much heating power it needs during the cold weather season. You may be able to use a standard heat pump or a cold weather heat pump. On the other hand, you may have a home where a dual fuel heat pump is the best option, combining convenience with affordability.

Feel free to ask our technicians any questions you have about making the best choice for indoor comfort. We won’t try to upsell you on a system that’s too much for your needs—we keep your best interests in mind because we aim to exceed your expectations.

How to Maximize Energy Savings with a Dual Fuel System

If you have a dual fuel system, it’s essential that you remember to have it scheduled for regular maintenance twice a year. As a heat pump, a dual fuel system works around the year, so it’s necessary to have maintenance done in both spring and fall each year. This is crucial to ensure that the system works at its most energy efficient and that the back-up heater will turn on when needed and operate safely.

We also offer dual fuel system repairs, and we urge you never to delay when it comes to calling us for service. Energy efficiency is only at its best when the heat pump doesn’t have a lingering malfunction. We offer emergency repair service for when the problem can’t wait.
